This candidate will bring a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and project management to assume the responsibility for leading and managing a team of engineers, and to ensure the successful development, delivery, and maintenance of software products. They will do so through channeling their passion for building and scaling new technologies as well as for constantly growing and learning through this process. 

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading, building and managing a team of talented software engineers. You will be in charge of running the engineering function at the organization from hiring the right talent to continue growing the team, and to working with cross-functional teams. Your work and leadership will drive the overall development of software products, while ensuring they meet high-quality standards, are delivered on time, and align with the organization’s technical and business objectives. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, great eye for talent, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative culture of innovation and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of software engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Team building and hiring: Spearhead the entire hiring process of new engineering talent to the team; from determining talent requirements to leading selection processes, interviews and hiring decisions. 
  • Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of software projects, ensuring they meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance to your team, helping them make informed decisions and overcome technical challenges.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Product Management, Product Design, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment between technical and business goals.
  • Risk Management: Identify and manage technical risks in projects and devise strategies to proactively manage and address the challenges and avoid disruptions. 
  • Security: Prioritize and enforce security best practices to protect customer data and company IP.
  • Resource Allocation: Allocate resources effectively, balancing the team’s workload and skills to meet project requirements.
  • Quality Assurance: Establish and enforce robust quality assurance and testing processes to maintain high software quality and minimize defects.
  • Scalability and Performance: Collaborate with your team to optimize software systems for scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Innovation: Foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning, keeping the team up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Budget Management: Manage the engineering budget, ensuring cost-effective project delivery.
  • Reporting: Provide regular reports and updates to higher management on project progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Team Development: Support the professional growth of your team members through coaching, training, and career development plans.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in the information security/Cybersecurity, fintech and healthcare industries.
  • Strong familiarity and experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Extensive experience with cloud computing platforms and services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Experienced in DevOps practices and tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 10-12 years of full-time experience (post graduation) in software development part of which at least 5 years of management and leadership experience is expected and required.
  • Strong technical background with a solid understanding of software development methodologies and technologies
  • Leadership and mentorship experience is required.
  • Security best practices and certifications are a plus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies is required.
  • A commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Must be able and willing to lawfully work out of our Toronto, Ontario office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
